The 174th Fighter Wing was formed in 1947. Based in New York State the 174th was one of 2 Air National Guard units to fly combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. The unit received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, with the "V" device for valor, during Operation Desert Storm. In 2010 the 174th replaced its F-16s with the unmanned remote piloted MQ-9 Reapers.
