July 28th 1945 Capt. Bruce S. Weber, commander of the VF-31 led a strike on the Japanese battleship ISE. Bruce, flying an F6F-5 Hellcat was credited with a direct hit that eventually sank the battleship. He was awarded the Navy Cross for this action.
